Wiki Paravia

I may be overzealous in my use of spoiler tags. Do you think it's safe to presume that anyone reading the Wiki has, at the least, read Curse of the Mistwraith?

originally posted by Trys

Nope. It is possible that someone may discover the wiki and its content could result in their wanting to the read the books.

The Paravia Wiki is still up if anyone is interested in contributing:

Add an entry if you have a few minutes to spare. Proofread an existing entry if you only have a few seconds to spare  Every little bit helps!

If anyone is still interested in the progress of the Paravia Wiki, I've just finished a cover-to-cover wikifying of Curse of the Mistwraith, including plot events, glossary entries, and general entries on the geography of Athera.

I'm going to take a couple months to incorporate my backlog of Janny's informative posts on this Forum and do some general clean-up and hole-filling, and then dive into Ships of Merior in the spring!

Brian!!! loud round of applause! (Thanks!)

I have recently added external links to FantasyLiterature.net on Janny's wiki page, but they were taken off because they know I'm the site's owner. In fact, they took off all of my links on all author articles saying there's a conflict of interest and FanLit.net is not "reliable" or "notable". (Discussed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Novels/Style_guidelines# Book_reviews and also here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Nihonjoe and on the Brandon Sanderson discussion page and on my talk page).

Janny told me that if I posted here, someone would add them. These are the links to add:

for reviews: http://www.fantasyliterature.net/wurtsjanny.html

For a recent interview (Feb 16, 2008): (link removed)

Thanks so much!

Hi Kat,

Wikipedia is separate from the Paravia Wiki – the latter is hosted on this site, and the former, we have no control over content matter. I'll be glad to add these sites to our own personal Wiki as soon as I can, but if Wikipedia has "un"added them that's the way things go

I have read the links Kat supplied from Wiki, concerning the above interview and review links - and it's quite evident from examining the content of them that there IS controversy present with these links and the hosts at the Wiki site.

Given that disclosure, it would not be appropriate, or authorized, to re-post the links there.

This does in no way refute my appreciation for the FantasyLiterature site. But each other site has it's choice as to what material it presents, and that has to be honored up front.

The evident love for fantasy and the care with which the fanlit site evinces its content frames its own story, and I believe it will prevail on its own merit.

Thank you Kat, for posting the fact there is a controversy. I think respect is due, even if, as you defend, you are not being respected in return.

What makes a "standard" is the question. Maverick thinkers have the choice, to conform or not.

The very term, Fantasy Literature is not conformist thinking. (grin) I think what you are Seeking to do is not to follow the well trodden path, or the pack…your site itself is not censored. That is the very merit! I have no hesitation about applauding you for taking that stance.

Kat,

Brian is right. I've found Wikipedia to not be the reliable source that they would like the world to think they are. While they spend time removing links and disallowing images (which can be a good thing) they don't seem to do much to ensure that the information in their 'encyclopedia' is accurate. I remember a news story last year where a number of students in a small college literature class all got the same wrong information in a paper they wrote. The teacher immediately assumed everything from cheating to plagiarism. The reality was that they used wikipedia as their source material. If you want to take them to task for spurious removals of your links you might point out these kinds of problems that they have.

I did go an read the exchange between you and the wikipediaist (bad word I know) and I believe that it will make no difference who adds your links to his section of wikipedia… he's going to act like god and remove them. Just further proof that wikipedia is not a reliable source of information.

Sorry I can't be of more help. However, I'm happy to add a link to Janny's webpage that points to the reviews of Janny's works on Fantasy Literature. I'm curious if there are anchors to the individual books on that page. Not necessary but I could have multiple links if there were.

Thanks, everyone!

I will post the interview with Janny at Wikipedia – they've said I can do that. If someone wants to post the link to the reviews, they may or may not remove it. At least it would be there for a while and perhaps do some good. Some of the editors like the site and will leave them. It just depends on who's trolling. But if they see my name, they might automatically remove it.

Trys, I will put anchor to each review – great idea – Thanks! Email me at (email removed) for the links.

I have added these links to the Paravia Wiki.

BU

It's only taken two and a half years at a dawdler's pace, but Ships of Merior has now been added to the Paravia Wiki at http://wiki.paravia.com/ ! I'll start on Warhost of Vastmark next, and hope to finish it before the complete series sits on my bookshelf

Please let me know if I've missed details or there are better ways to organize material – any and all contributions are appreciated, no matter how small!

Regards,
BU

Brian - check out the in two discussions ongoing at GoodReads - there are readers there who may help. Warhost is this month's read at the Fantasy Book Club Series, and Beyond Reality is doing a 3 chapter set per week read of the entire series. They've just finished Mistwraith and will begin Ships on Thursday.

Thanks Janny – I've been keeping up with the GoodReads discussions as I have time, and actually had an offer of proofing help from one of the participants!

Glad you are getting some support!!!

Hello everyone,

After a brief hiatus, the Paravia Wiki has moved to:

https://wiki.paravia.com/

Trys has graciously redirected the old "wiki.paravia.com" URL to point to this new location so your old bookmarks should work again. I'll be handling the administration duties going forward so he no longer needs to battle the MediaWiki beast.

If you are interested in contributing to the Wiki, instructions and guidelines are provided on the Welcome page.

I hope you find it helpful!

Thank you so much!! I missed it dearly.

Huge thanks to Brian, and to the Gryphon for keeping the archive.

Do help if you are so inclined, to make this a resource for readers going forward.

I am extremely grateful.

Hello everyone,

As of today, the Paravia Wiki is now up-to-date with all plot events, locations, facts, and trivia from the first 4 books (through Fugitive Prince). I'll be starting Grand Conspiracy next, at my usual stately pace.

The Wiki has had about 400 unique visitors since it was set up on its new host last October. It has a loyal readership from the US, UK, AUS, and NZ, along with new visits daily from countries in South America and Europe. Most new visitors are discovering the Wiki by googling the names of major characters from the books.

Main Page:
https://wiki.paravia.com/

Quick Reference Indexes for Each Book:
https://wiki.paravia.com/wiki/Curse_of_the_Mistwraith_Chapters
https://wiki.paravia.com/wiki/Ships_of_Merior_-_Quick_Reference
https://wiki.paravia.com/wiki/Warhost_of_Vastmark_Chapters
https://wiki.paravia.com/wiki/Fugitive_Prince_Chapters

I am always open to suggestions on how to improve the Wiki, and hope that you find it to be a useful resource!

BU
